Hello Granny and Grandpa, I am having a great time in India. I like Indian food and I have learned a lot about Indian culture. But I am not in the capital city Delhi. We are travelling in the south of the country. Luckily, in early summer there are long dry periods with temperatures above 18 °C. I am going to share my exciting experience of my visit to an Indian farm with you. Recently, my sister, I and our family friends, have been to an organic farm. I know that you like gardening and I believe it will be interesting for you to learn about this place. This place is called “Urban gardening”. It is very far from Chennai, about 100 km. Chennai is the capital city of Tamil Nadu, the southernmost Indian state. We went to the farm by bus. It took us a long time to get there. While we were travelling, the tour guide told us about organic farming.

I was excited to see the farm and the different kinds of plants. We were welcomed by the owner of the farm and he took us round his farm. This organic farm was divided into sections. He showed us different seeds and told us that each plant was planted in a section. He taught us how to pick lady fingers. They are small green pods from a tropical plant. We also tasted the lady finger raw but I didn’t like it. And then, we went to the corn field. My friend, my sister and I ran around and played together with the farmer’s son in the corn field. The farmer gave us some corn which we cooked in the hotel. Then we saw flat beans. After that we saw peanuts (a nut that grows underground in a thin shell). I liked raw peanuts. Finally, we went to the watermelon patch and pulled out a huge watermelon. We all ate the tasty watermelon. Yummy! After seeing all these plants, we got on the comfortable bus and came back to the hotel. I was not tired at all. I enjoyed my trip to the farm and if I get a chance to visit the farm again, I won’t miss it. This farm is a great place! Back next weekend. See you soon. Best wishes, James

Hello Bob, I have found some information for our project about dolphins and I want to share it with you. I am really happy that our project is about these animals. Bottlenose dolphins are playful and friendly. They can jump as high as 20 feet in the air. They also blow bubbles. Dolphins like to play very much and form friendships that last very long. They like to surf in the waves and swim through self-made bubble rings. They can swim up to 22 miles an hour. Dolphins can be from 6 to 12 feet long. Bottlenose dolphins are amazing animals. Each dolphin has a special whistle that it creates soon after it is born. This whistle is used for identification, just like a human’s name. Dolphins also use echolocation. It is the use of reflected sound waves for finding things. When the sounds hit an object in the water, like a fish or rock, they bounce off and come back to the dolphin as echoes.

Echolocation tells the dolphins a lot of things about the object, such as the shape, size, speed, distance, and location of the object. Here’s an interesting story: two dolphins were able to chat…over the telephone! The special call was made in an aquarium in Hawaii, where the mother and its two-year-old baby swam in separate tanks connected by a special underwater audio link. The two dolphins began making sounds. «It seemed clear that they knew who they were talking to,» says Don White, who ran the experiment. «Information was passing back and forth very quickly.» But what were they saying? That’s what scientists are trying to find out by studying both wild dolphins and those living in zoos all over the world to understand their secret language. They haven’t completely understood the code yet, but they’re listening …and learning. In many ways, we are just like dolphins that swim in the world’s oceans and rivers. Dolphins are mammals, like we are, and must swim to the surface to breathe air. They team up in groups to do tasks. And they’re smart. I hope this information is interesting. See you soon. Bye, Nick

Прочитайте текст. Для каждого предложения А–Е выберите один правильный вариант ответа из четырёх предложенных (1, 2, 3 или 4). Hello Ed, I have found some information for our project. Please, read this information. Russia has different plants and animals. The brown bear is one of the most famous animals in Russia. These animals usually living in forests or tundra can be seen in Alaska, and in many parts of Russia. The number of bears does not change but people have to protect these animals. At the food chain, brown bears play important roles as predators (animals that kill and eat other animals) which keep the populations of other animals under control. Brown bears are dangerous animals and they can attack people. It is not a good idea to keep brown bears as pets. Human activities are dangerous for the population of brown bears. People often hunt brown bears as the trophy.

People cut down trees in forests and destroy places where bears live. There are other bears in Russia too. Polar bears live mostly on the sea ice of the Arctic Ocean. A polar bear has a thick layer of body fat and a coat which protect it from cold air and water. Scientists say that these animals are marine (connected with the sea) because they spend most of their lives on the sea ice. Polar bears are known for their strength, but they’re quite speedy, too. The average young adult polar bear can run at up to 25 miles per hour or around 40 kilometers per hour. Younger adult polar bears are faster than older bears, as they do not have as much fat as adult bears. Despite having a big body, bears are good swimmers and even reach six miles per hour by moving with their front paws and holding their back legs flat to control their movement. The main diet of a polar bear is meat. They spend almost 50 % of the time hunting for the food. They need to hunt as much as they can because they need a lot of fat to survive. Polar bears are the top of the food chain and have an important role in the food chain. I hope you will like this information and our project will be interesting. See you soon. Bye, Jane
