I’ve been in London for three weeks already, and every day I discover something new. London is so different from my hometown. The streets are busy, the buildings are old and beautiful, and there are people from many different countries. I’m staying with my aunt and uncle. They live near Hyde Park, and I often go there for a walk. The park is huge, with lakes, flowers, and birds. On Sundays we usually take sandwiches and have a picnic there. Yesterday we even rented bikes and cycled around the park. I also go sightseeing almost every day. I’ve seen the British Museum, Buckingham Palace, and the London Eye. My favourite place so far is the Tower of London, because it is full of history. I also like travelling by double-decker bus. From the top you can see the whole city. The weather is not perfect. It often rains, so I always take an umbrella. Last week it was very windy, and my umbrella broke! But I don’t mind, because there are so many things to see. Next week we’re planning to visit Oxford. My uncle says it’s a very beautiful city with one of the oldest universities in the world. I’ll send you photos soon. Please write back and tell me about your holidays. Best wishes, Mary

It was a wonderful experience. We stayed in Edinburgh, the capital. The city is full of history, with old castles, churches, and narrow streets. Of course, we didn’t see it, but the lake itself was beautiful and very big. We took lots of photos there. We also visited the Highlands, with mountains and green valleys. It was very quiet and peaceful. I really liked Scottish traditions. People in traditional clothes play bagpipes in the streets, and you can hear their music everywhere. We also tasted haggis, a traditional Scottish dish. It was unusual but delicious. The weather was typical for Scotland — sometimes sunny, sometimes rainy, and often windy. But it didn’t stop us from exploring the country. I hope you are having nice holidays too. Write back soon! Best wishes, Tom

A Journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway Dear Kate, I want to tell you about my unforgettable journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway. It is the longest railway in the world, more than nine thousand kilometres long! The train goes from Moscow to Vladivostok, and the journey takes almost a week. I travelled with my parents during the summer holidays. We had a comfortable compartment with beds and a small table. Every day we looked out of the window and saw different landscapes: forests, rivers, mountains, and wide fields. Sometimes the train stopped at small stations, and we could buy food from local people. I tried delicious homemade pies and fresh berries. On the way we met many travellers from different countries. Some of them spoke English, and we had interesting conversations. I was surprised how friendly people were on the train. We played cards, read books, and listened to music together. My favourite part of the journey was crossing Lake Baikal. It is the deepest lake in the world, and the water looked so blue and clear. I took many photos. This trip taught me a lot about Russia’s size and beauty. Best wishes, Nikolai

A Visit to Athens Dear Irina, I’m writing to you from Athens, the capital of Greece. It is one of the oldest cities in Europe and is full of history. Yesterday we visited the Acropolis, which stands high above the city. The Parthenon temple was amazing, even though it is partly ruined. From the hill we could see the whole city and the sea in the distance. We also went to the Acropolis Museum. It has statues, vases, and other treasures from ancient Greece. I learned a lot about Greek gods and heroes. Later we walked through Plaka, an old part of Athens, with narrow streets, small shops, and cafés. The atmosphere was very friendly, and we tried Greek ice cream there. Today we visited the National Garden, which is full of plants, flowers, and even animals like turtles and birds. It was nice to relax in the shade after walking in the hot sun. I noticed that modern Athens is also interesting: there are busy streets, tall buildings, and many cars, but the ancient ruins make it special. I will never forget this trip. Best wishes, Oleg

Paris is a city of beauty and culture. On the first day we visited the Eiffel Tower. From the top, the whole city looked like a picture: the River Seine, the bridges, and the streets with cafés. The streets are narrow, full of painters and small shops. We bought some souvenirs there. The food was wonderful. I tried croissants, French cheese, and onion soup. My favourite was the croissants, fresh and warm in the morning. The weather was sunny, but in the evenings it got cold, so we wore jackets. Paris is a city I will never forget. A Trip to Berlin Dear Natasha, I’ve just returned from Berlin, the capital of Germany. The city is modern, but it also has a long and interesting history. On the first day we visited the Brandenburg Gate. It is one of the most famous symbols of Berlin, and many tourists were taking photos there. The next day we went to the Berlin Wall Memorial. Our guide told us about the time when the city was divided into East and West. It was very moving to hear real stories of people who lived then. We also visited Museum Island, which has several world-famous museums. My favourite was the Pergamon Museum, where we saw amazing statues and ancient buildings brought from different countries. After that, we walked along Unter den Linden, a beautiful street with cafés and shops. Of course, we tried German food. I tasted sausages, pretzels, and apple strudel. My favourite was the strudel — sweet and delicious. The weather was a bit rainy, but we didn’t mind, because there was so much to see and do. Berlin is a city full of life and history. I hope you can visit it one day too. Best wishes, Dmitry

The Great Wall of China Dear Anna, I’ve just come back from China, and the most impressive thing I saw was the Great Wall. It is one of the greatest wonders of the world. The Wall is over 20,000 kilometres long and was built more than two thousand years ago. At first it was made to protect the country from enemies, but now it is a symbol of Chinese history and culture. We visited a part of the Wall near Beijing. It was very high and steep, with thousands of stone steps. Walking up was difficult, but the view from the top was fantastic. We could see green hills and valleys stretching far away. Our guide told us many interesting stories about how soldiers lived on the Wall. They used to keep watch from the towers and send messages with smoke signals. Today the Wall attracts millions of tourists every year. Some parts are well restored, but others are in ruins. There are even marathons held on the Wall! It was amazing to walk along something so old and important. Best wishes, Kate

Inventions that Changed the World Dear Peter, I’ve just finished reading a book about inventions that changed people’s lives. Some of them are very old, but they are still important today. One of the most important inventions is the printing press, created in the 15th century. Thanks to it, books became cheaper and more available. People could read, learn, and share ideas much more easily. Another great invention is electricity. It gave people light in their homes, power for machines, and later computers and the internet. The telephone also changed the world. It allowed people to talk across long distances. Later, mobile phones appeared, and today we cannot imagine life without them. The internet is another invention that connects the whole world. It helps us study, work, and keep in touch with friends everywhere. Of course, there are many other inventions, such as cars, airplanes, and even simple tools. But the book says that inventions are not only about technology. They are about people who have ideas and the courage to make them real. Best wishes, Alex
